Keyword strategy

There is no getting around the fact that search engine optimization (SEO) is something that every business and (niche) website owner must pay attention to. According to Google’s most recent statistics, more than ninety percent of people who get online every day begin their session by using a search engine. There are over 100 billion searches performed on Google alone every month, and research shows that over seventy percent of people doing these searches will never look past the first page to find results.

For those who want their websites to be found online, choosing the right keywords is vital.

Read on to discover how you can create a keyword strategy that will help you find success with SEO and online marketing.

Developing The Right Keyword Strategy For Online Success

For those who aren’t aware, “keywords” are the words that a user types into a search engine search box in order to find something specific. These are the words that determine the order in which websites come up in the search results.

The websites that are best optimized for a particular keyword are the ones that will rank the highest for that keyword and therefore receive the most clicks from search engine users.

Website traffic depends on rankings and rankings depend on optimizing for the right keywords. But how do you know what the right keywords are?

While there are many things to look for when selecting the best possible keywords to optimize for, keyword competition is one of the most important factors. Keep reading for a brief explanation of what keyword competition is and why everyone should be paying attention to it.

What Is Keyword Competition and Why Does It Matter?

Keyword competition refers to the number of other websites who are optimized for the same keywords. Google (and other search engines) only ranks about ten websites on its first page.

The more competition that there is for a particular keyword, the harder it’s going to be for websites to gain first-page rankings since there are so many other sites who are trying to do the same thing.

For this reason, in case you want to rank on the first page in your chosen niche you need to pay close attention to the overall number of websites that come up when searching for a particular term.

In order to find this magic number, you need to perform what is referred to in the world of SEO as an “allintitle” search. Because this concept can sometimes be confusing, the next section includes an overview of what “allintitle” searches are, how to perform them, and how to use the information gathered to develop a solid keyword strategy.

What Are “Allintitle” Searches And How Are They Used?

An “allintitle” search tells you how many websites have an exact keyword in their title tag. A title tag is used in ranking algorithms that decide which websites rank highest for a particular search term. If a website has a keyword in their title tag, you know that they are serious about ranking highly for that term and you should therefore consider that website your competition.

Completing an “allintitle” search can be done in just a 3 easy steps:

  1. Go to the Google search engine. Many webmasters use Google for this purpose because it’s the most popular search engine.
  2. Type allintitle followed by a colon and the chosen keywords with no space in between. The search box should read: allintitle:keyword. Putting quotation marks around the keyword may return less accurate results, so be sure to type in the search term exactly as this example indicates.
  3. Look at the number of results provided at the very top of the search engine results page. This is the exact number of websites who have used that keyword in their title tags.

Note that long-tail keywords (those with more words in them) are more specific and will have less competition than short-tail keywords. Low competition niches and keywords are those that return less than 1,000 total results for an “allintitle” search. Moderately competitive niches return between 1,000 and 6,000 results, while niches with more than 6,000 results are considered highly competitive.

If you are still wondering how to find your niche, it’s best to go for those with the highest number of searches but the lowest keyword competition.

For me, I try to find keywords with low search volumes, oftentimes below 1,000. Don’t be afraid of using these keywords; When you create content on a regular basis (at least 1 per week) it all adds up.

I find the title competition more important, and I look for keywords with a Title competition / Search volume – Ratio below 1. The lower the ratio, the better.

Here I share another great way to find low competition profitable niche markets.

Keywords will dictate everything from how to monetize your blog to the SEO strategies that are used. It’s doable to perform the above approach manually, but you can speed up the process by using a keyword tool.
